Jason Rivera-Sarabia’s story is one of resilience, discipline, and the pursuit of dreams. As an 18-year-old Business major at National Park College and a first-generation college student, Jason reflects on the profound impact Play Where You Stay had on his life.

Introduced to the program in 10th grade by a friend, Jason found himself challenged and supported by Coach Maxi, who taught him the value of discipline and hard work. “Maxi was hard on me, but it helped me build character,” Jason recalls. “He’d make me run if I was late, and it pushed me to stay on top of my responsibilities, on and off the field.”

What did that process look like going through the college prep program at Play Where You Stay?

“Maxi had us practice with him three times a week, like personal training. He’d make us work out, lift weights, practice with the ball, and he got us a tryout at NPC. The coach contacted us, and he liked us, and we committed.” – Jason Rivera-Sarabia

This emphasis on discipline became a cornerstone of Jason’s success, guiding him through the challenges of balancing academics, soccer, and newfound independence in college. “Some days you don’t feel like training or doing schoolwork, but that discipline keeps you going.”

Play Where You Stay’s commitment to accessibility was equally transformative for Jason and his family. “Clubs are expensive, and my parents didn’t have enough money for that. But Play Where You Stay made soccer possible for me,” he explained. The program’s local practices and free opportunities allowed Jason to focus on developing his skills without the financial strain that often comes with club sports.

A standout memory for Jason is scoring two decisive goals in a quarterfinal match in Murfreesboro. “When I scored, we all celebrated together as a team. Seeing our coaches so happy—it was just fun,” he shares. Beyond the victories, Jason treasures the sense of community and support that Play Where You Stay fostered, which continues to inspire him today.

As a first-generation college student, Jason recognizes the significance of his journey. “It’s big for my family. I get a lot of support, which motivates me to keep pushing,” he says. Looking ahead, Jason aspires to graduate, further his soccer career, and possibly pursue an MBA. For now, he remains focused on achieving a 3.5 GPA and making strides both on and off the field.

Jason’s journey underscores the life-changing impact of accessible, supportive programs like Play Where You Stay. “If I hadn’t stuck with Play Where You Stay, I’d probably just be working with my dad. Now, I’m in college and building a better future,” he reflects.
